On April 7, 2026, all eyes were on the mayoral race for Bowie, Maryland. Why? Two words: Rebecca Pearce. Who is Rebecca Pearce? Rebecca Pearce is the 23-year-old who had the audacity to believe that she should and could become the youngest mayor Bowie has ever elected.

An alumna of Howard University, Pearce did not wait for permission or approval. Nor was she distracted by the other eight candidates who stepped up once former Mayor Tim Adams stepped down following an appointment to the Prince George's County Council. Pearce simply followed her own inclination to be the change she wanted to see. And with the full support of family and community members who aligned with her desire to bring fresh energy, vision, and impact, Pearce put the entirety of her focus into convincing the residents of Bowie that she was the best candidate for the job from late February until early April.

Having had a history of public service, running for public office was, for Pearce, a natural progression of her commitment to changing the lives of people. “I am running because I always knew I was always going to go into office and I decided if not now, then when?” she said, according to MadameNoire. “I love people, I love community, I love investing back into the community that ultimately built me.”

According to Pearce's campaign website, her platform included but was not limited to community safety, crime prevention, tax relief, and youth development programs. Although Pearce did not win the special election on April 7, 2026, her effort makes her a winner in every sense of the word. Her innate leadership qualities make her someone to watch. And her boldness makes her someone to learn from.

What are we to learn? One, she teaches us that courage is more powerful than fear. Two, she teaches us that age is only a barrier for those who allow it to be. And three, Pearce teaches us that sometimes the real win is believing in yourself enough to let the world see your belief in full view.

Rebecca Pearce made history. And that history cannot be erased. Instead, the history Pearce made will serve as a catalyst for other Black women and girls to be the force for good the world needs - even if the odds appear to be stacked against you.
